Remember Dotty? While she lives on in memory, and I continue to do my best to carry on her name (I’ll explain later), she is no longer in the name of this company. Abe and Dotty is now Abe’s Market. Why the change?
1) Some folks were having a hard time with the double D in anD Dotty. I found myself repeating the name all too often.
2) Spelling was unclear to people. Again, it was not a good sign that I kept finding myself saying “Dotty, with a Y. That’s D-O-T-T-Y.” Not good for a URL.
3) We want a name that conveys a trustworthy, classic Americana, mom-and-pop shop. Reaction to Abe has been great. We hear things like “Abe as in Honest Abe – I like that.” Or, “Abe sounds like a guy you’d want as a buddy.” “Dotty” just wasn’t doing that for people.
So, effective immediately, we’re Abe’s Market. And we’re proud of it!
Now, how am I carrying on Dotty’s name? Dotty, actually Dorothy, was my grandmother. She died young, and, through creative etymology, I am named after her. Dorothy (doro-theo) means gift of god in Greek. Jonathan means the same thing in Hebrew.
By the way, Abe was Dorothy’s husband – my grandfather. Much more on him later….
