My two older kids were home sick for a few days last week. One day they were occupied for a few hours watching “The Sound of Music.” It inspired us to discuss our favorite things.

No question, my favorite thing about Abe’s Market is getting to know our producers, the real heroes behind the products. When starting Abe’s Market, Richard and I discovered that we’ve always shared a fascination with the stories behind the products we buy and use. Products do not just magically appear. Every product has a name and a face behind it – someone who comes up with the idea, someone who sources the materials, someone who actually makes the product, etc. Where are products made? How? Why? What inspires the producers?

As we’ve said from day 1, every producer has a unique story. We help and encourage our producers to tell their stories. Sure, we push them to list their product facts – what’s in it, how much it costs, etc. But we also ask them to tell us, and you, about themselves. And they respond. It’s how we know that:

• Cammie at Eco-Kids was a nanny for 15 years and is a coffee fanatic
• The Beekman 1802 geniuses, Josh and Brent, recently squared off in an epic skating competition on their beautiful pond in Sharon Springs, NY
• Larry’s (from Larry’s Beans) purpose in life “is to concoct wondrously luscious works of coffee and make the world better at the same time.”
