Phthalates are actually easy to pronounce (THAL-ates) but can be hard to avoid. They’re common in soft plastics, synthetic fragrances, and conventional personal care items like nail polish. Vinyl items like toys and shower curtains like can contain up to 40% phthalates by weight! They’re worth trying to avoid as they’ve been linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental disorders, and organ and nervous system damage.
