The Story of Bunny Butt Apothecary
Bunny Butt Apothecary is the creation of a twenty-something-year-old bunny owner named Anna. One day, Anna set out on a mission to prove to the world that you can smear yourself with natural things and smell darn pretty doing it and, behold, a business was born. Why the name? With the popularity of the Leaping Bunny program, bunnies have become a sort of symbol of cruelty-free practices, and our chief concoctor (yes, that's a word!) is madly in love with her own two bunnies. Plus, bunny butts smell like a spring meadow, didn't you know?
In addition to her interest is mixing together smelly things, Anna is also is a certified yoga teacher and is currently working toward her Ph.D. in South Asian religions at UCSB. She graduated from Rutgers University with a double major in English and French literatures. In fact, Bunny Butt started out largely as a side-effect of her need to keep herself sane as she was completing her honors thesis. By the end of the year, Anna had finished said thesis, won a departmental award for it, and had a flourishing business on her hands.
Over the past year, she has been increasingly aided by her other half, Scott, who is a high school physics teacher by day and an aspiring soap-maker/lifter of heavy oil pails by night. Scott also graduated from Rutgers University, with a BS in Physics and Mathematics. His experience with doing research in the high energy division thoroughly convinced him that a life of sitting in a lab and writing code was not for him. Consequently, Scott is currently working towards his M.Ed. at Rutgers, while doing his student teaching at the local high school and instructing yoga on the side.
As you can see, Anna and Scott keep busy. Together, they hope to spread the fragrant Bunny Butt love to every corner of the globe.
Our bunnies are our biggest inspiration, which is odd, really, because they have absolutely nothing to do with bath and body products. But, even though they've never even so much as been near a bar of soap in their lives, they manage to encompass the loving, carefree, silliness that we hope Bunny Butt Apothecary can pass on to others. Bunnies are joy, personified -- who could ask for greater inspiration?
The smells. Definitely the smells. Soapmaking is sort of like a cross between high school chemistry and baking, it makes the house smell amazing and sometimes stuff explodes.
Another baking parallel -- the toughest part of any work session is the cleanup. You haven't lived until you've tried to scrub mica-colored beeswax out of a measuring cup. Really.
I'm going to echo one of my yoga-teaching friends and propose that every day is interesting in different in its own way. If I really have to think about our company history, perhaps it would be the day that we realized we were doing enough business to justify ordering our oils in 50lb pails...or maybe the day we got our bright green Kitchen Aid mixer.
Doing large craft shows has totally changed the way we run our business. If someone had showed us this many tiny jars of lotion a few years ago, we would have called them crazy.
In five years, Anna will (hopefully) be on the tail end of her Ph.D. with a nice position lined up somewhere...perhaps in a place where she and Scott can open their own yoga school. And we all know how every yoga school needs its own full stock of natural lotions and potions!
