The Story of delphine
delphine is a fine letterpress stationery and design company. We provide high-design products centered on an aesthetic that is clean, elegant, modern and luxurious. We apply this modern aesthetic to the centuries-old craft of letterpress printing to create stationery and invitations of the highest quality that are striking and beautiful.
Letterpress is printing with movable type and metal plates in which the raised surface of the type is inked and then pressed into the paper to obtain an image in reverse. More (+)
The process is tactile and mechanical, and requires an astonishing amount of craftsmanship and talent to perfect.
Unlike more modern printing processes. letterpress requires high quality materials and a talented craftsman. The iron and the ink, the mechanics of the press and the spirit of the pressman suffuse each printed piece with character that is immediately evident. The result is stationery with a distinct, ta tile quality unsurpassed by other printing methods; the words on paper are felt as well as read.
Letterpress fell out of favor and common use by the mid 20th century with the rise of cheaper, super high-volume printing presses. For several decades, letterpress stationery products were still available, but were simply uninspired. During the last several years, designers like delphine have adopted the medium of letterpress to create beautiful stationery, invitations and prints.
Erika Firm, our award-winning designer and founder, is the daughter of a commercial artist and an engineer. She has been creating since she was a tot. Erika earned Bachelors of Science in Journalism and in French from Ohio University; she earned a Master of Mass Communication from The University of Georgia. She has worked at magazines, newspapers and dotcoms as well as at a great design studio, and at a lovely independent literary bookshop. All along the way, however, she was freelancing and designing cards and invitations for friends and family. It turned into a full time business after a late night of champagne toasts (and, let's be honest here, tequila shots) at a sublime seaside wedding. She announced she was starting a stationery business and jumped right in ... to the Florida Bay.
Erika is a proud entrepreneur, designer, member of AIGA, wife and mother .
