The Story of Green Lullaby

Green Lullaby's Founder

Green Lullaby was founded by Ruth Kenan (designer, 39, Israel). She designed the first product, the Eco Cradle, for her first born, and the idea of designing in cardboard that is environmentally-friendly, strong, light and foldable came up. Its suitability for children became obvious: the limited durability (2-3 years) suits the ever-changing needs of a growing child's environment, and the softness and innate shock absorbance make for safer surroundings for the child. The foldability and lightweight, however, made it great for parents and grandparents. Green Lullaby partnered with internationally renowned graphic designer Yonatan Factor, to create Green Lullaby's unique look and feel - innovative through both the use of the material and the perception of the objects, yet relating to the tradition of children's toys and furniture.

Green Lullaby's products are produced in Israel, in a fair-trade factory. The products are made from material that is over 60% recycled and are completely recyclable. Also, because cardboard is biodegradable - these products are as green as can be. All the additives are water-based and non-toxic.

At the moment the Green Lullaby's range includes the Eco Cradle, Benz Bench and Benz Table, dollhouse, Dollcradle and our Multiboxes. All these products comply with the relevant standards and are protected by Green Lullaby's unique and completely non-toxic flame retardant.

Interview with Green Lullaby

What inspires you

Ruth: I find my inspiration in the tradition of furniture and toy making. I find it inspiring to see what people over the years have created for fun, comfort, to ease their lives, and what artifacts they wanted to be surrounded by.
But this is always coupled with observing my children and their imagination games and a wish to create for them a truly creative environment, maybe the kind that previous generations (including myself) did not experience.

Favorite part about creating your products

Ruth: production, I love production. So much of the initial process happens in my head and on my laptop, it is almost like pregnancy (with prototypes simulating ultra-sound check ups). Production is the actual birth: it is never as I imagine it, and there are always problems, But I end up holding an actual product that I dreamed about for several month (or since I was a little girl and wanted to play with something like that myself...).

Toughest part of your day

Ruth: Waking up. There just aren't enough hours a day to work, be with my family and sleep. Sleep is were I make most compromises. Mornings are hard.

Best day in company history

The day we found out that thanks to the efforts of many individuals and companies around the world, including ours, the global warming effect has been overturned before it made irreparable damage. Well...hasn't happened yet...

Biggest decision you ever had to make

The biggest decision is constant - What do we insist on and where do we make concession. Life is hard. Staying true to ourselves and our beliefs is hard, but without them — why do anything?

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years

We see ourselves creating complete interiors, that are soft, safe and sustainable, that fit the ever-changing needs of a growing child's environment, that are both beautiful and useful for the convenience of parents and children.
We would like to continue to do things that we ourselves can use and that we are proud of
