The Story of Little Duck Organics

Little Duck Organics's Founder

In February of 2009 I started developing an organic baby food company. At the time, I had no experience in the packaged food industry, but a strong background in design and branding. It took 10 months to learn the business and develop our first line of products. After a lot of trial and error, we successfully launched Little Duck Organics in December of 2009 at grocery and specialty stores in New England.

The idea for the company was the product of experience. While shopping for my two young daughters, I was not finding much of a selection in the baby aisle at our local grocery store. I wanted to create a brand that provided infants and toddlers with simple unprocessed foods that parents could feel good about feeding their kids.

Since our launch, all products from Little Duck Organics have been Certified Organic, NON-GMO Project Certified, Gluten Free and Kosher Parve. As the company grows, we will continue our commitment to developing delicious foods made using only the highest quality ingredients.

Our company now has products available at over 50 grocery stores on the East Coast. In May of 2010, we were approved for sale at Whole Foods Market and through a distributor that will allow us to distribute our products to over 1000 specialty and grocery stores.

Interview with Little Duck Organics

What inspires you

Good design, Food, Architecture, Start-ups & People who think beyond what's on the surface.

Favorite part about creating your products

I love packaging design. All of our design work is done in-house, so I feel like we have a lot more flexibility to play around with layouts & new designs than some companies who outsource that work to other firms.

It's a great feeling to walk into a grocery store and see a product that you designed in someones cart, or in an aisle on the shelf.

Toughest part of your day

Right now...getting out of bed. I work a lot at night, so getting my day started is sometimes a struggle.

Best day in company history

Earlier this year, we were approved for Whole Foods Market, UNFI, and a regional distributor here in New Hampshire (all within a couple days of each other). That was a good week.

Biggest decision you ever had to make

Making the decision to go "all in" with this business. We have all made sacrifices to get to the point that we are at right now. I believe in this product so much that I know it will all work out in the end.

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years

In 5 years, our goal as a company is to have national distribution and a full line of organic baby products. I would really love create more jobs here in New Hampshire and introduce a local aspect to our product line (I.E. Giving a portion of sales back to a local charity, sourcing local ingredients Etc.)

My personal goal is to get to bed before midnight :)

Favorite vacation spot
We like to vacation in Maine during summer and Colorado during winter. Eventually, Little Duck Organics will have offices in both places :)

Favorite product besides your own
I would have to say either Jim's Organic Coffee (Sweet Love) or GT's Kombucha (Citrus). Both are staples to get me through the day. // GT's Booch: Please come back soon. It's been too long :(
