Sandy Maine began her business of making all natural soaps with an investment of $15.00 in 1979 at the age of 22. She invented her own equipment and manufacturing processes, developed her own product line, and created a market for all natural soaps (which were unfamiliar to consumers in the early 1980's). After authoring numerous books on soapmaking and business, Sandy helped to pave the way for thousands of of home soapmakers and hundreds of cottage industries across the country that manufacture and sell soap.

As Sandy's company grew, she learned from experience how to develop and manage a microenterprise. Her business, SunFeather Natural Soap Company, has become one of the largest manufacturers of its type in the United States. Sandy has developed a socially responsible model of operation for her business, which takes a holistic view of the "bottom line" and the treatment of stakeholders in the business.

In 2004 SunFeather was honored to be chosen as the soap supplier to Oprah Winfrey's 50th birthday party. SunFeather provided 6 custom scents and colors for the highly publicized occasion. SunFeather was also a charter member in the Northern Trading Alliance, an eBay-based e-commerce project developed by then Senator Hillary Clinton for artisans in New York State.
