Stay Healthy While Being a Desk Jockey

Working 9 to 5, what a way to make a living! Dolly Parton sang those poignant lines many years ago, but perhaps she should have sung, “Working 9 to 5, now you are at high risk for a heart attack!” OK, so perhaps that's a wee dramatic, but it is true with the amount we all work, combined with the prevalence of cars, fast food and online streaming services, sedentary lifestyles are threatening human health like nothing before. We all should exercise at least 30 minutes every day, but after a long day of work it becomes difficult motivate to hit the gym. So what do we do?

6 Ways to Stay Fit While Sitting All Day

Walk to Work
If it is at all possible, walk to work instead of driving. Obviously this is difficult if you have a long commute, but consider any public transport you might be able to take at least part of the way. This will also help you save money and do your part for the environment. If you do have to drive, try parking slightly farther away and walking to your office.

Take Breaks
Get up from your desk and stretch your legs. Taking regular breaks can be a good way to keep fresh and productive throughout the day. Use your lunch break to exercise: hit the gym, go for a quick run, walk or bike ride.

Do Desk Yoga
Perform some easy yoga moves at your desk to help clear your mind, focus your attention and relieve stress, which helps prevent ulcers, weight gain and other illness. Performing various poses, even a few times a week, can help stretch and lengthen your spine, relieve neck pressure and relax your shoulders.

Get a Standing Desk
Another phenomenon sweeping across American workplaces is the standing desk. This allows you to move more freely and can benefit your posture and health in general. Some people have even gone as far as to set up their desk on a treadmill.

Pack a Healthy Lunch
Rather than eating out, bring healthy lunch to work. And avoid unhealthy snacking at work. It might seem like a good idea to keep food by your desk, but it can take its toll on your general health. If you do find yourself getting hungry during the day, avoid chips and candy and instead go for healthy snacks that will fill you up properly.

Take Advantage of Work Benefits
A lot of employers offer special healthy lifestyle benefits, such as gym passes and health insurance. Check with your employer to see which benefits are available to you and take advantage of them whenever you can.
